Truth Two: The Measurement Collapse
Good and evil aren’t opinions. They’re measurements.
Physics has a word for when things are aligned, structured, in phase: coherence. And a word for when that alignment breaks down into noise: decoherence.
These aren’t metaphors. They’re measurable. Shannon quantified it. Boltzmann formalized it. Every lab in the world uses these measurements daily.

Now look at every domain humans care about:

They’re not like each other. They are each other — the same variable measured with different instruments.
The Inescapable Gradient
The physicist’s entropy, the doctor’s diagnosis, the ethicist’s judgment, and the theologian’s discernment are all reading the same dial.
This is why:
- Sociopaths still know right from wrong (they feel the gradient)
- Beauty is recognizable across cultures (same signal, different languages)
- Truth claims have universal structure (Shannon entropy applies to all information)
- Disease is universally bad (biological decoherence is always destructive)
The Coherence Signature (χ)
Every domain maps to a single underlying variable: coherence (χ).
χ ∈ [-1, +1]
χ = +1 → Maximum coherence (Good, True, Beautiful, Healthy)
χ = 0 → Mixed state (Ambiguity, Transition)
χ = -1 → Maximum decoherence (Evil, False, Ugly, Diseased)
This isn’t philosophy. This is measurement.
What This Means
If good and evil are measurements of coherence, then:
- Morality is objective (not cultural preference)
- Evil is ontologically real (not just absence of good)
- The ground must be coherent (or there’s no standard to measure against)
Scope and Boundary Conditions
What this paper establishes: The concepts of coherence and decoherence from physics (Shannon information theory, quantum decoherence, thermodynamic entropy) are not metaphors when applied to other domains — they describe the same underlying structural property. The Coherence Signature χ ∈ [-1, +1] formalizes this.
What follows from that: Good and evil, health and disease, truth and falsehood, beauty and ugliness are not merely cultural preferences. They are measurements of a real structural property (coherence) that exists independently of observer opinion. Morality is therefore not subjective.
What does NOT follow:
- That physics determines morality, or that moral knowledge is reducible to entropy calculations
- That the table of domain mappings is exhaustive — it is illustrative of the pattern, not a complete ontological reduction
- That χ = +1 and χ = -1 represent pure states achievable by physical objects (they are limits in the formal model)
- That this argument alone identifies what the maximum-coherence ground is — that identification is the work of Truth Three
Falsification conditions:
- Demonstration that Shannon entropy and similar measures apply to information channels but structurally fail to map to moral or aesthetic domains (requires showing the formal structure breaks down, not merely that the vocabulary differs)
- Discovery of a domain where the gradient between coherence and decoherence is genuinely absent rather than merely difficult to measure
- A counter-example: a widely recognized case of moral goodness that increases Shannon entropy or biological decoherence, without a compensatory coherence increase in another domain
